Not getting results with PSYCH-K® or other healing methods? Do you feel stuck or like it’s difficult to make progress?

In this blog we take a closer look at secondary gains and how they can get in the way of your success.

Secondary gain is a psychology term which is used when you benefit from a problem you are experiencing. It’s when you gain advantages from an unwanted condition, circumstance, or limitation in your life. The benefits come from NOT overcoming your problems. It doesn’t mean the problem is positive, but there are benefits to having that problem. Thus, it becomes more beneficial to keep the problem than to overcome it.

For example, you might be craving more attention in your life. So, subconsciously, you accidentally injure yourself. The result? Everyone starts paying more attention to you and taking care of you. You get what you want (attention), but at the expense of something you don’t want (injury).

Or perhaps you declare that you want a meaningful relationship and despite being asked out by potential partners you find what you believe to be a legitimate excuse not to go, resulting in you staying in your comfort zone and not having to be vulnerable or rejected.

For many people, these unwanted problems create the outcome they want. Most people have no idea they’re doing this. Why? Because it’s happening at a subconscious level, which means it’s below the level of awareness. They’re not faking it. They just know they’re getting the results they want, which perpetuates the problem.

Why are secondary gains a problem?

Secondary gains seem innocent enough however they clearly move us away from our dreams as they perpetuate problems and create even more unhealthy patterns.

The benefits that come with secondary gains can prevent you from creating the life change you say you want. Whether consciously or subconsciously, these gains keep you stuck in the victim role. You might make some progress, but usually that’s short-lived as you return to old habits.

What to do about secondary gains?

Secondary gains can be identified after a PSYCH-K® session where you didn’t experience much success.  After examining your PSYCH-K goal statements and actions plans ask yourself, what benefits do I gain from these problems? Is there anything keeping me stuck? What fears could I be protecting myself from?

PSYCH-K® can help you transform your answers and any fear around losing those benefits. It can also change old beliefs and perceptions to allow you to create a new way of thinking and behaving.
